On the 7th September 1940, between 6.30am and 11am, 1984 Dunera Boys arrived at Hay Railway Station in 48 carriages of 4 steam trains. They then walked to Hay Internment Camps 7 and 8.
Each year on the first weekend in September we remember these men and their stories. A time for family, friends and community to come together and remember.
PROGRAMME DETAILS:
Friday 6th September
6.30pm - Dinner at the Riverina Hotel - Meet and Greet.
Saturday 7th September
8.45am - Hay Railway Station - Symbolic re-enactment at Hay Railway Station. Museum display will be open
9.15am - Morning Tea - Served on the railway platform, Hay Tourism Team to provide. and tour of the Dunera Museum.
10.00am - Symbolic March - from railway to Dunera Way, stopping at Dunera Commemorative Obelisk in Dunera Way. The Obelisk was unveiled in 1990 for the 50th anniversary.
12.30pm - 1.45pm - SPECIAL EVENT: Hay War Memorial Hall, 202 Lachlan St, Hay
Dr Nicole Forsyth and musical friends will be staging a performance of music related to the Dunera. Nicole is a good friend to the Dunera story, and has done a remarkable work rescuing and performing pieces of music composed by Dunera internees. For Dunera Association members attending the Hay reunion, tickets to this special event will be free.
Afternoon - Free time to choose to rest or to visit the various historic War Memorial Museums
Options are:
Hay Gaol Museum - The site of first Military Hospital where sick Dunera Boys were sent before the Camp hospital was completed.
Shear Outback Museum - A history of the Australian sheep shearing and wool industry. Shearing demo and talk at 10.30am and 1pm every day.
Bishop's Lodge Historic House and Garden - 1890 historic house and garden. Open 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday, 9am - 12noon Saturday.
Hay General Cemetery, Jewish Section - Visit the grave of Menasche Bodner, the only Dunera Boy to die in Hay.
6.30pm - DINNER, plans to be advised.
Sunday 8th September
10.00am - Morning Tea at Bishop's Lodge Historic House and Rose Garden provided by the Dunera Hay Museum and Friends.
