Ben - All round cowboy, Hay Rodeo, 2003
The Hay Rodeo and Gymkhana Club Inc. is one of the oldest Rodeo Associations in NSW, being run in a professional capacity for 51 years and in a non professional capacity for many years previous to that. It was originally held outside the South Hay Hotel, moved to the back of the old Hay Hospital, then in 1952 moved to the Arena at the Hay Showgrounds.
It is held on the weekend after the long weekend in October. The Pony Club Gymkhana starts off the day at 8.30am in the morning, with classes for all ages. The Rodeo commences at 12pm. The program starts with the Open Barrel Race; the rest of the rodeo is about rough stock and balance and agility. The highlights include open bull ride, saddlebronc, junior Poddy ride, ladies barrel and comedy clowns. The Rodeo Queen and Princess and All Round Cowboy spotlight the talented and successful of the day. There are many seasoned competitors who claim that Hay Rodeo was their introduction to Rodeo. There is continuous hot food available with BYO alcohol. Also camping and shower facilities are available on the grounds.
Money raised from the rodeos is donated back into the community, predominately supporting youth activities: tennis, gymnastics, gymkhanas and other events in need of financial aid.
