Hay cemetery

Dig up a little Hay history

The current cemetery is the second one for Hay, the first one was situated in Hatty Street behind the previous hospital.

The first burial in the new cemetery was that of Dr. Echlin who died on the 27th October 1861 at the age of 49 years. It was said that he had given the land on which the cemetery is laid out to the public of Hay.

Some of the Hatty Street interments were removed to the new ground, among them one of John Ledwidge's young daughters who had died in 1861. John Ledwidge was one of the early pioneers who settled in Hay, his step father Henry Angel was the first to settle on the land which is now called Uardry.

The lawn cemetery was established in 1977 north of the Catholic section. The Hay Shire Council maintains these cemeteries.

There is a copy of the burials in the Hay Cemetery at the Hay Visitor Information Centre, Library and Hay Shire Office.
