Carrathool Bough Shed Races

Always an event to remember

The Carrathool Races are the epitomy of the 'bush race' meeting. Organised by the Carrathool Jockey Club in the small town of Carrathool, the small community of 99 friendly souls, bursts at the seams with over 2,500 excited race lovers and larrikins ready for the race meeting. This event is one of the main events for the community each year so locals work tirelessly to organise a fantastic day.

The Jockey Club Committee cater’s for everyone's needs with a continuous BBQ, publicans booth, refreshments and entertainment at the racecourse continuing well into the night.

Fashions on the field are a feature for ladies & gentlemen, as well as the Jillaroo's sprint & Jackaroos dash, which always musters a great crowd. The Jillaroos and Jackaroos race is a hotly contested foot race, through the dirt and dust that leaves the participants exhilarated and the cheer squads hoarse with delight. There are also great prizes to be won.

Great prize money attracts a field of horses and trainers from near and far (including NSW, ACT & Victoria) which produces well-contested races. The event is a 6-race program, starting at 1pm with bookies there to take bets, as well as SKY Channel for the seasoned punter.

The famous bough sheds are aptly covered in gum & boree leaves and shade cloth to shelter those from the sweltering heat, but sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and stubby holder are essential accessory items. The day is usually warm, with the chance of experiencing a dust storm, rain and flies. A real Aussie experience!

After the last race the activity continues well into the night at the racecourse, with two well known bands, Teez & Lowrider, providing a great continuation to a fantastic days entertainment. Thousands of people throw down their swags under the wide starry skies to end an exhausting but great day.

People travel from interstate for this famous outback event the "Carrathool Bough Shed Races".
