Officially opened in 1967, after ten years of fund raising and work towards its establishment. Named after John Houston, the President of the Hay Swimming Pool Committee for the whole 11 years the Committee existed.
It is now run by the Hay Shire Council, with FREE ENTRY. There are three pools in total: an Olympic size swimming pool, a "medium" pool, and the toddler’s pool, which is completely under cover.
Surrounding the pools is extensive, well-maintained lawns with numerous shade structures. There is also a BBQ and volleyball net that are free.
The John Houston Memorial Swimming Pool is open from October through to the end of March, and the opening hours are 12noon to 7pm every day except Tuesdays, when it closes at 6pm for the Hay Swimming Club Time Trials. These times are subject to weather conditions and numbers. Entry to the John Houston Memorial Swimming Pool is free.
