Italia Day at Hay

The first Italian POW's arrive

On 22nd May 1941 the first Italian Prisoners of War (POW's) from the north Africa campaigns arrived in Hay. They went into Camps 7 and 8 to replace the Dunera Boys, who had left for Tatura Vic and other places. On 9-10th July 1944 Italian Fascist POW's in Camp 7 murdered two Italian Royalist POW's. A third faction were Italian Communist POW's. The great majority of Italian internees and POW's were industrious and hardworking and worked in and around Hay on farms and wood camps. Many locals fraternised with them at Murrumbidgee River picnics.

On Saturday 26th May at the Museum, from 5pm to 6pm there will be drinks, nibbles and music, when you can learn more about the 2,000 Italian POW's captured in north Africa campaigns and sent to Hay.
